PLAYTEST REPORT CONCLUSION
The Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser feels overpowered compared to the Klingon D7. This is just a gut feeling that will or will not be confirmed by future Playtest Reports.
The Pulse Phasers on the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser feel a bit too strong. Each of them could auto-kill a Drone at R1 no matter what they rolled, with the exception of the Light Pulse Phaser would could auto-kill on any roll except 6. The Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser didn’t fear any of the Klingon’s Drones, including the Scatterpack. To correct, the Pulse Phaser Charts can be changed or the number of Pulse Phasers on the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser can be cut down, but further Playtesting is required before making such changes.
Keep in mind the Mitrax Galaxy does not have Drones per se, but rather Ram Torpedoes. Still, how the Pulse Phasers affect Alpha Sector Drones is important, for balance reasons.
Giving the Worlds of Unions Heavy Cruiser a total of 4 Pseudo Hellfire Torpedoes is too much of an advantage (as demonstrated by this battle). The SSD’s need to be modified to cut that down to only 2 Pseudo Hellfire Torpedoes total.
The Hellwings did not come into play, but they were considered on Turn 3. However, it didn’t make sense to pay 6 points of energy just to get +3 Speed. The points are better spent directly on speed without using the Hellwings. The Hellwings are better used for Turn Mode and HET advantages rather than a Speed Boost.
The Neutronium Armor did not come into play in this battle, but one can see it is yet another advantage for the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser (and other Mitrax starships). The Klingon had no such benefit protecting its vital systems.
It was not possible for the Klingon to employ the old strategy of “survive the first plasma attack and then chase while the plasma cruiser rearms for multiple turns.” This is because the Hellfire Torpedoes can be armed in different modes from one turn to three turns. So this created a different tactical dynamic that worked in the Worlds of Unions favor. It wasn’t necessarily unbalancing, but it did change the nature of the combat.
The question of Weapon Status greatly affected the initial Hellfire Torpedoes. With the first two turns of arming considered done, the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser was able to complete the third turn of arming for both Hellfire Torpedoes, making them both especially deadly right at the beginning of the battle. Functionally, two three-turn Hellfire Torpedoes are nearly the equivalent of two Plasma-R’s, but they do lose warhead strength every hex they travel, making them less deadly. And while other Alpha Sector starship might have a mixture of PL-S’s and PL-G’s, the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser only has two Hellfire Torpedoes (max 90 damage total) to rely on.
This outcome of this battle could have been a question of Tactics. Is it possible for the Klingon D7 to have won over the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser if it had employed different tactics? Perhaps, but the advantage still felt like it leaned toward the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser (for various reasons). This means the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser SSD needs to be adjusted (because the Mitrax Galaxy Design Paradigm calls for balance against the Alpha Sector). However, before these changes are to be made, further Playtesting is required, particularly against other Alpha Sector Heavy Cruisers, like the Gorn, Federation, and Romulan. I have a feeling an Alpha Sector Plasma Ship will have a completely different outcome versus the Worlds of Union Heavy Cruiser.
